As far as I'm aware, this is the first serious study of medical perception and the postmodern concept of "the gaze" (Foucault used the French phase "le regard", which is usually translated as "clinical gaze," but the term "medical perception" used most commonly in his title I think fits bette). That being said, it's more or less impossible to talk about pathological anatomy and the Paris Clinical School before referencing a very early Foucault book "The Birth of the Clinic: An Archaeology of Medical Perception". If you want to rustle some jimmies, try citing "Discipline and Punish" in this forum. Foucault, of course, is always a controversial reference on r/AskHistorians (and in history in general). So here is my "mod alert" - I am going to talk about the ever-controversial Michel Foucault (though very early Foucault). What a wonderful question! I'm going to answer this in three parts - the first talking about autopsies and medical perception, the second about Charles II, and the third to generally talk about my approach to paleopathology and medical history. A couple people messaged me about Foucault - I wrote a response in Part 4 below (and about how, despite finding him influential, I largely agree with the mods policy on him). The current rotation is:ĮDIT: Okay - the FOUR part answer is all done. Previous AMAs | Previous Roundtables Featuresįeature posts are posted weekly. ![]() You can now OCR documents with more confidence. OCR has become so better, thanks to the addition of medical and legal dictionaries. While these are the big changes we loved, there are some minor yet notable improvements too: On any day, it’s a great feature for designers. For properly placing the page number, you’ll have to experiment with some numbers, though. In the Advanced Section sub-menu, you can decide where the Page Number would appear. To do this, you have to go to Edit Header, Footer, Page Numbers Insert. Don’t worry, PDFpen and PDFpenPro now have the ability to do this, through an incredibly simple method. When you are making a brand-new PDF document, you may want to experiment with where you place the page numbers. We’ve wanted this feature for some time, and it’s great that PDFpen has included it. Now, you can see the Prompt on the selected device, and you have to complete capture there. When you want to insert something this way, you can go to File -> Import from iPhone or iPad and choose the device you need. It means you can directly import images and documents you have captured using your iPhone or iPad camera. This feature, introduced in macOS Mojave, is now coming to PDFpen and PDFpenPro 11. If you are using an iOS device, you need no introduction to Continuity Camera. This is a pretty great feature while creating a newsletter or a whitepaper. Now, when you select a piece of text, you can change the various aspects of the text, such as the Font, Boldness, Font Size, Alignment and of course Underline. You can enable this feature by going to View and choosing Show Font Bar. This could be the reason why PDFpen 11 is bringing a dedicated Font Bar. If you are making a newsletter for instance, the bad font selection can be catastrophic. Taking care of the right fonts is very important when editing a PDF document. You can enable this by going to Window -> Split -> choose Vertically or Horizontally. You can also stack the two windows either vertically or horizontally. There are also options to make sure that you can select the right pages on Main View and Split view separately. PDFpen also lets you adjust the viewing space according to your convenience. ![]() Would you like to know the best part? The edits you make are reflected instantly. For instance, one of the windows is on 20th page while the other is on 29th. However, you can navigate within individual documents. This is way different from opening two different documents at the same time.Īs you can see in the image, there are two views of the same document. Have you ever wanted to compare two different parts of the same article and make edits? Well, you can do that using the brand-new Split View Mode in PDFpen and PDFpenPro. This time, however, there is a lot of innovation. The developers also try to bring features we do normally see in Adobe Acrobat Pro. Most of the newly-added features were either requested or highly in demand. One thing we love about Smile Software is that they listen to customers. What is new in PDFpen and PDFpenPro 11?īefore we go deep into the review, we will have a quick look at the new features offered by PDFpen 11 and PDFpenPro 11. Hope it will help you choose this product with more insight. Instead of simply listing the new features, we will talk about the revamped PDF editing and PDF creating experience. In this article, we will have a quick but comprehensive review of PDFpen and PDFpenPro 11. Now, the latest version of PDFpen and PDFpenPro are released and we wanted to talk about them both. We found that the tool was offering so many features users were looking for - at a fraction of what you’d pay for Adobe. Built-in software - like Preview in macOS - don’t work so great either.Īnd, when we covered the best PDF editors for macOS, PDFpenPro was the upgrade pick. Because Adobe Creative Cloud isn’t a choice everyone can afford, we all look for other PDF editors out there. Many file formats have come and gone, but PDF doesn’t seem old at all.Įven so, we cannot say the same when it comes to PDF editing solutions. It was developed in 1990s by Adobe and still maintains the top position when it comes to cross-platform document formats. There are so many document formats in the world, but PDF is something special. ![]() ![]() ![]() Or I could change the wall switch to be smart, costing me $45 in total. If I wanted to upgrade this to have smart functionality, I could either pay $45 each for Hue color spotlights – costing $540 in total. This might leave you wondering what they point of them are (considering that smart bulbs support on/off, dimming and color changes) – but a good example of why switches can be better is my kitchen/dining room. They tend to just support turning the linked light on and off. Smart switches also nearly always require a neutral wire, which not all houses have, and most smart switches don’t support dimming. They therefore need to be wired in to your house and thus require some level of electrical competence to install. Smart switches replace the standard ‘dumb’ switch on your wall, and they mainly work with standard ‘dumb’ bulbs – allowing them to be turned on and off in a smart way. How smart switches work Marketing image for the Leviton Decora Smart WiFi 15 Amp Light Switch In this case, smart switches can be more useful – and much cheaper. However the truth is also that for some rooms, you just want to smartly turn lights on and off. Video can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Livingroom with Philips Hue ()Īs a result, I’m personally a big fan of smart lighting. An awesome of this can be seen on YouTube: Fun stuff like syncing to music or a movie! Some (but not all) smart bulbs allow you to sync your lighting to music or movies, such as frequently dimming and brightening bulbs (and changing the color) to match the music or the movies.Scenes can be awesome for creating mood lighting in various rooms of your house. This can then be triggered in the app or with a voice command to your smart speaker. Many smart bulbs allow you to configure ‘scenes’, which is where you configure one or more of your bulbs to go to a particular color and brightness. This is all trivial to setup with supported smart devices ( Nest cameras excluded, unfortunately!). For example, some people turn their lights on for 10 minutes after their Ring cameras detect motion (or their Ring doorbell is pressed). You can set smart bulbs to go on/off (or change color) at set times of day, or even link it with other smart devices. You can turn the bulbs off at the wall if you’d like ( without damaging the smart bulb), but you can do this by using your smartphone app, using a voice assistant like an Echo or Google Home device, or do this automatically based on time, sunset or sunrise. This is actually what I do with my landing smart bulb at night: use it as a night-light as I have young children. Pretty much all smart bulbs allow you to turn down the brightness of the bulbs, all the way down to essentially a night-light setting. Dimming capability (without extra wiring needed – yay!).Many smart bulbs support full RGB color, meaning you can set your bulbs to bright pink or orange if you’d like! Whilst some other smart bulbs only support white or ‘white ambiance’, meaning they can be set to bluey and yellowy colors to track natural day and night cycles. The ability to change the color of them.Whilst some smart bulbs work over WiFi ( such as LIFX) and other bulbs work over ZigBee or Bluetooth ( such as Philips Hue), in general smart bulbs offer the same sort of features: Then you download the relevant app and start playing around with them: changing their color, dimming them to 5% brightness and back up to 100% brightness, and turning them off randomly to confuse other people in the house! After all, they just screw into an existing light socket and they turn on. Smart bulbs are one of the easiest smart devices to get set up with. A genuine smart home will actually end up with a mix of both smart bulbs and switches – not just one or the other.ĥ) The best uses for smart bulbs and switches How smart bulbs work How I got started with smart lighting: a starter kit and four E14 candle bulbs. The decision of whether to get a smart bulb or smart switch is very much dependant on people’s requirements and the room they’ll be used in. Hence I wanted to write this post and go through when it’s best to buy smart bulbs vs switches, and when it’s best to mix the two. However in other cases, a smart bulb is better to buy – especially as mood lighting, or when you want dimming capability. there are some instances where a simple smart switch is all that people actually need. Whilst smart bulbs are much easier to sell to people (“You can set them to bright orange, and dim them too!!”). Mkay… that’s helpful! In reality, there can be some truth to this statement. Whenever I see newcomers to smart homes ask what the best smart bulb to buy is, I often see one or two replies saying “ Noooo, smart bulbs are POINTLESS!! Just get smart switches instead!!“.Īnd then they say nothing else to back up this view point. ![]() Our customers include electricity companies, renewable energy producers, electric railways, energy intensive industry plants, and district heating plants and pumping stations. ![]() The Netcontrol team consists of professional engineers and we spend a high percentage of our revenue on research and development.
